OpenAI Will Cut Cursor: Why ?

Until November 12 the picker still has GPT. After that you bring a key or you leave.

For most of the last two years, AI labs behaved like they were building a commons. Ship a model, then get it in front of as many developers as possible, wherever they already worked. Plug into every editor, every terminal, every third-party wrapper willing to take you. Nobody called it generosity, because it wasn’t ,it was distribution strategy. The more surfaces a model touched, the more habits it built, the harder it got to dislodge. And for a while the arrangement genuinely worked for everyone: editors got a bench of interchangeable models to compete on, developers got real choice instead of lock-in, and labs got reach they couldn’t have bought with ads. Openness was the cheapest growth channel any of them had.

OpenAI Will Cut Cursor: Why ?

OpenAI will cut Cursor

The article argues that Cursor’s model picker illustrates a shift from “open distribution” toward tighter, competitor-controlled ecosystems: OpenAI is ending the contract supplying GPT models to Cursor, so GPT disappears from Cursor’s free options on November 12. It explains that Cursor isn’t just a thin GPT wrapper—SpaceX’s acquisition (via subsidiary ownership) and Cursor’s forked editor design let it control core features like Tab, Agent, and the built-in model workflow. Cursor’s backend assembles prompts and routes requests through its own servers even when users bring API keys, and its architecture supports modular model choices while still relying on bundled third-party access for “Other Models.” OpenAI’s concern is that Cursor could turn the rich traces of real engineering work into valuable signals for distillation and continuous benchmarking, creating strategic risk for OpenAI. Finally, it compares Cursor to OpenAI’s own Codex path and ends with advice for builders: reduce dependency on any single provider by owning the “harness” layer that connects chips, models, and tools, so alliances and contracts can change without breaking your product.
