AI isn’t replacing developers in 2026, it’s replacing routine coding work and raising the bar for everyone else. Here’s what actually changed and how to adapt.
Eight months ago I watched a junior engineer on my team ship a login flow in eleven minutes. Copilot wrote the boilerplate, Claude reviewed the edge cases, and the pull request looked clean. It merged. Three weeks later it caused a production incident because nobody had actually checked what happened when a token expired mid request. The code was fine. The understanding wasn’t.

The rest of the article argues that AI isn’t eliminating developer jobs but changing what developers are paid for: it compresses mechanical tasks like boilerplate, translating specs into first drafts, writing tests, and spotting obvious syntax issues, while leaving harder work—judgment about what to build, architecture tradeoffs, cross-system debugging, knowing when shortcuts are risky, and owning production consequences—to humans. It explains why the shift feels existential (work changes, hiring becomes more proof-based, and coordination roles get squeezed), then lists the skills that matter now, such as critically reviewing AI output, building real end-to-end projects, learning system design earlier, specializing where AI is weaker, and practicing clear explanations of tradeoffs. The author’s key takeaway is that the real danger is widening gaps between developers who use AI to move faster on understanding they already have versus those who use it as a substitute for understanding, raising the bar in a way that’s ultimately more challenging—but also more interesting—for careers.
