The headline average is in Anthropic’s own documentation. So is the fact that 90% of users stay under $30 a day, which means there is a tail, and the docs name exactly what puts you in it.
If you are trying to work out the claude code cost per developer before rolling it out to a team, the number you want is published and easy to miss. Across enterprise deployments Anthropic puts it at around $13 per developer per active day, and $150 to $250 per developer per month.

Beyond the basic averages, the article explains what actually drives higher Claude Code costs: agent teams multiply token usage because each teammate runs a separate instance with its own context window (about 7x more tokens), and the prompt cache becomes much less effective after you move from subscription usage to usage credits as the cache TTL drops from about one hour to five minutes (and continues to fall until you can increase it via settings). It also covers “hidden” spend sources like scheduled tasks, idle session turn-taking, goal check-ins, and the way long sessions cost more than their visible activity because each request re-sends full conversation context and tool results; it recommends using /clear (free) between unrelated work rather than relying on /compact (not free) for large contexts, limiting team size, turning off or minimizing idle/automated behaviors, and reducing overhead from MCP tooling, extended thinking, and irrelevant context loaded from CLAUDE.md. Finally, it clarifies that cost meters are based on list price and seat-based rolling windows (five-hour rolling plus weekly), that limits differ between session/weekly and model-specific caps, and that the documented figures aren’t guaranteed to match every organization without versioning and pricing configuration—so budgeting should use pilots and account for the tail of heavy users.
